Singer-songwriter and activist aims for No. 1 with a powerful protest single to mark the climate summit at Copenhagen.
Written during a period that saw him arrested for obstructing a coal train outside Drax power station, Theo Bard’s simple ironic message sums up the challenge presented to all nations in tackling climate change. He warns about the fallacy of the seductive message ‘If you’re having a good time everything will be fine’ just when the future of humanity, and the planet are being decided in Denmark.
Driven by a dark and compelling reggae rhythm, Bard’s thick, rich voice speaks to us through beautifully crafted lyrics that carry their message in distinctive poetic style. He muses that ‘they sold us dreams of fast machines and glamour queens to worship night and day.’
As for his actions on the coal train, Bard says “After I was arrested I was held in a cell while the British Transport Police raided my home. I was in the middle of working on the lyrics at the time, and they confiscated the book in which I was writing. I had to start again from scratch, this was not an easy song to write, but to date has been one of the most important.”
Proceeds from the single will go towards planting trees with Yorkshire based charity, Treesponsibility, who work with volunteers and plant around 10,000 trees a year.
Having a Good Time, released on London indie TAPE, will be available on all digital platforms from the 7th of December, a dubstep remix by UK electronica mastermind Animals on Wheels will be available simultaneously.
